Commissioning Your Pump Matters

The importance of being cleared for take off.

Pictured above is our good friend Matt Jensen from Water Matters. He’s listening for flow separation within the pump inlet manifold of a newly commissioned Shark Tank Exhibit. Among many tools Matt was using to make certain the system was working effectively, the mechanic stethoscope was certainly a critical piece of arsenal utilized in this project.

“Sell a pump, sell a problem”

Anyone ever heard that? At MDM Inc. we don’t play that game. Most problems with pump systems can be identified at start up, that’s why we advocate a thorough commissioning process and require documentation to initiate our factory warranty. Pictured here is a step from our commissioning document that would identify any overload conditions with motor running amps and shell temperatures.

Pictured here is a portable ultrasonic flow meter. Another valuable tool any legit pump system expert should keep close when commissioning pump systems and kinetic devices such as horizontal end-suction centrifugal pumps need to be sized at their highest efficiency performance to provide the lowest total cost of ownership benefit. Otherwise, high maintenance and operational costs will vaporize the bottom line $$. Not to mention underperformance of productivity, the real killer of profits. That’s why taking the time to understand the fluid dynamics of your pump system should be a science, not guess work.

Aquatic Animal Life Support Operators Symposium AALSO 2016

AALSO 2016 Symposium and WorkshopsMDM inc

MDM, Inc. will be participating again at the Annual AALSO Symposium and Workshops aka the AALSO Denver 2016. The symposium takes place on April 17-20 at Embassy Suites, Loveland, Colorado and is hosted by Denver Zoo and Landry’s Downtown Aquarium. MDM Inc., will be at Booth 317 & 319.

AALSO (Aquatic Animal Life Support Operators) is a non-profit organization focused on creating opportunity for operators and vendors to exchange information and ideas freely by providing a forum for life support operators, professionals, and industry leaders to exchange information, ideas and experience to enhance stewardship of the animals in care.

We are excited not only for the Symposium and Workshops to take place in the Rocky Mountains; essentially our backyard, and this year MDM is honored to be assisting AALSO on three of the workshops and part of the production of the AALSO big water loop.

A complete circulating system dubbed the Big Water Loop will run through sub 4,000 square feet of workshop floor and will be the centerpiece of the workshops. Attendees will be able to work on several different components such as actuators, probes, flow meters, sensors, heat exchangers, pumps and many others all while the system is operational. Our water quality series will be able to actively sample water from this system and attendees will learn how to perform various water analysis.

We have been working to prepare exciting workshops on the following topics:

Introducing QSYS, much more than a pump: It’s a system.

MDM has developed the QSYS product by starting from ground zero, examining each component of a pump that limits efficiency, introducing innovations to improve the efficiency of each of those components and then putting them all back together into a totally new product. This unique product is really the building block of a radical new system for efficient pumping.

MDM’s philosophy on product development is simple and consists of three main points; innovation, efficiency, and quality. We don’t just want to have a “me too” product portfolio.

MDM strives for integrating disruptive technologies for the fluid handling industry. Almost 15 years ago, MDM’s president, Gene Ashe, identified a potential way to improve the design of traditional axial flow pumps. Their large and cumbersome designs were overloaded with fasteners, shafts, bearings and other moving parts. It was the challenge to reduce the footprint and assembly complexities in these axial flow pumps that became the catalyst for the Qsys axial flow pump design.
